One stitch at a time
It began with Gram.
My grandmother, Anna Daiber Meyer, taught me to quilt one stitch at a time.
Quilting with Gram was never only about fabric and thread. It was something shared—knowledge passed from one person to another, hands working together, stories told around a quilt.
And Gram came with a community. Her quilting friends welcomed me into their circle. They taught, encouraged, corrected, laughed, and stitched alongside me. Long before I had language for kith and kin, I had experienced both.
A quilt with a history
This One Started With Tupperware
In 2011, I made a quilt inspired by my mother’s delightfully classic 1970s Tupperware—the oranges, yellows, browns, and greens I had loved for as long as I could remember.
The quilt was only my second hand-quilted piece. To begin quilting it, Gram’s friends gathered in the driveway. We loaded it onto my grandmother’s hand-quilting frame, using the quilt stands made by my grandfather, Harold. Then they showed me how it was done.
I wrote about that day at the time. Even then, I knew the best part of the quilt wasn’t its color palette. It was the people it brought together.
Kith & kin
Quilting has given me both.
Kin are the people we’re connected to by family.
Kith are the people we gather along the way—the friends, neighbors, teachers, and communities who become part of our lives.
Today, Quilt Kith & Kin is where I make original quilts, memory quilts, and textiles; where I quilt the work other people have made; and where I invite people into my studio to spend a day making together.
Some pieces begin with a memory. Some begin with a person. Some begin with a delightfully classic set of 1970s Tupperware.
But they all begin somewhere. And almost always, there is someone connected to the story.
